Discover the Top 6 Must-Do Activities in Barcelona

Barcelona is a city that is known for its culture, architecture, and cuisine. It is a place where you can explore the works of Antoni Gaudí, taste delicious tapas, and soak up the sun on the beaches. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler to Barcelona, here are some must-see things that you should add to your itinerary.

1.     Visit the Sagrada Familia

No trip to Barcelona would be complete without a visit to the iconic Sagrada Familia. This masterpiece of architecture was designed by Antoni Gaudí and is still under construction after more than 100 years. The Sagrada Familia is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is easily recognizable by its towering spires and ornate façade. Inside, you’ll find stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings, and stunning sculptures that are sure to take your breath away.

Tip: We highly recommend the tour of the interior as it is worth every penny. And no need to climb the tower inside. This was not worth the time or money, in our opinion.

2.     Stroll Around Park Güell

Another one of Gaudí’s masterworks, Park Güell is a whimsical public park that is filled with colorful mosaics and playful sculptures. Take a stroll around the park’s many paths and enjoy the views of the city from the various viewpoints. Make sure to get a picture with the famous mosaic lizard, which has become one of the most Instagrammed spots in the city.

Tip: If you love parks and the outdoors as much as we do, you will want at least 3-5 hours to walk this park. Be sure to bring plenty of water, although they sell bottled water if you run dry.

3.     Try the Local Cuisine and Enjoy the Tapas

Barcelona is known for its cuisine, and there are plenty of dishes that you should try during your visit. Sample some tapas like lobster croquette, Iberian ham, patatas bravas, or paella at a local restaurant. The fried squid sandwich and lobster croquettes were two of our favorites!

Tip: We visited several restaurants for tapas. Our favorite (by far) was Canete, just off Las Ramblas. Be sure to make a reservation and be sure to sit at the bar!

4.     La Boqueria Market

La Boqueria market is one of the most famous markets in the world, and it’s located right in the heart of Barcelona on Las Ramblas street. The market is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, and it’s where you can find some of the best quality produce, meats, and seafood in the city.

La Boqueria is a bustling market that attracts visitors from all over the world. Inside the market, you’ll find rows and rows of stalls selling fresh seafood, meats, fruits, vegetables, and more. Many vendors offer free samples of their products, so it’s a great place to try some of the local cuisine.

Tip: Try some of the prepared foods that vendors have at La Boqueria market or try one of the small bars or restaurants. If you’re a foodie, this is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Barcelona. And it’s an excellent spot to pick up some souvenirs to bring back home.

5.     Explore the Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter is the historic heart of Barcelona and is a must-visit for anyone interested in the city’s rich past. The neighborhood is home to many Gothic and medieval buildings, including the Cathedral of Barcelona, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, and the Plaça del Rei. It is also filled with cozy cafes, boutique shops, and lively bars, making it a great place to spend an afternoon.

Tip: Take a bicycling tour of the city and you can get a great overview. Then head back to the areas of most interest to explore further!

6.     Relax on the Beach

Barcelona is blessed with several beautiful beaches, all of which have their own unique character. Barceloneta Beach is the most popular, with its golden sands and lively atmosphere. Nova Icaria Beach is a little quieter and is great for water sports. If you’re looking to escape the crowds, head to Bogatell Beach or Mar Bella Beach, which are a little further from the city center.

Barcelona is a city that truly has something for everyone. Whether you are interested in history, architecture, food, or just soaking up the sun on the beach, this vibrant city is sure to delight. So why not plan your trip today and discover the best of Barcelona for yourself?
