Featured Destination: Montenegro
If you’ve been dreaming of a European escape that’s equal parts coastal beauty, medieval towns, and off-the-radar cool — Montenegro is calling.
Bob and I were just in Kotor for one day off of our cruise itinerary and it is definitely a place we will return to for a longer stay!
With its fjord-like bays, dramatic cliffs, and a coastline dotted with yachts and walled cities, Montenegro feels like the Mediterranean… before the crowds caught on. It’s got the glamour of the Riviera, the soul of the Balkans, and the kind of scenery that makes your camera roll feel like a postcard rack.
Here’s what you’ll find on this small but spectacular slice of the Adriatic:
📍 Ancient towns like Kotor, where time slows down
📍 Beaches and boat clubs along the Budva Riviera — glamorous, golden, and surprisingly accessible
📍 National parks, glacial lakes, and dramatic mountains
📍 Local wine, coastal cuisine, and just enough grit to keep things interesting
If you're craving a European getaway that’s stylish but unspoiled, this guide covers when to go, what to see — and how to make it all effortless from start to finish.
The Timeline
PLANNING YOUR VISIT
If you're wondering when to visit... Montenegro’s charm changes with the seasons — here’s how to time your trip just right.
Spring (May–June): One of the best times to visit. Mild temps, blooming landscapes, and far fewer crowds than summer. A perfect time for hiking, boating, or slow mornings in old towns.
Summer (July–August): Peak season along the coast. The weather is hot, the beaches are buzzing, and the yacht scene is in full swing. Great for nightlife and energy — but book early for best availability.
Fall (September–October): A sweet spot with warm weather, fewer tourists, and harvest season in the wine regions. Coastal towns stay lively, and national parks are perfect for outdoor adventures.
Winter (November–March): Much quieter and chillier, especially inland. Best for travelers interested in skiing, local culture, or pairing with a winter trip to Croatia.
If you're wondering how long to stay...
Give yourself 7 to 10 days to slow down and truly take it in. That’s enough time to explore Montenegro’s coast, venture inland to the mountains or wine country, and still have space for lazy breakfasts and sunset sails.
If you're wondering when to book this type of trip...
For summer and early fall travel, 4 to 6 months ahead is ideal. Many of Montenegro’s best stays are boutique, and spots in Kotor and Budva fill quickly — especially for waterfront views or charming Old Town stays. Early planning means better options and far less scrambling later!
Must Visit Spots
MONTENEGRO MUST-SEE SPOTS
Bay of Kotor: This bay is the heart of coastal Montenegro. Wander the cobblestone streets of Kotor, cruise past tiny islands, and visit the charming village of Perast for jaw-dropping views.
Budva Riviera: Montenegro’s lively beach scene lives here. Expect a mix of history, nightlife, and waterfront charm — plus beach clubs and seafood restaurants with unbeatable sunset views.
Durmitor National Park: For travelers craving adventure. This mountainous region is full of hiking trails, glacial lakes, and epic drives (like the Tara River Canyon, Europe’s deepest gorge).
Lake Skadar: Montenegro’s wine and nature region. Spend an afternoon cruising the lake, tasting Vranac wine at family-run vineyards, and watching wild pelicans take flight.
