8 Must-Do Activities for Your Hawaiian Vacation
The islands of Hawaii offer an amazing mix of natural beauty and rich cultural experiences. From stunning beaches to active volcanoes, Hawaii has something for every traveler. Based on my own trips to these beautiful islands, here are eight activities I recommend to make your Hawaiian vacation truly special.
My experience: One of my favorite Hawaii memories happened before I even left the airport! There's something magical about stepping off the plane and having someone place a fresh flower lei around your neck. The sweet fragrance, the warm welcome, and that immediate sense of "aloha" sets the perfect tone for your entire trip. When we checked into our hotel, they offered us a refreshing tropical beverage that made us feel instantly relaxed and special. These small touches make Hawaii so unique - the hospitality begins the moment you arrive and continues throughout your stay.
Whale Watching
The Big Island is a fantastic place to see humpback whales in Hawaii. From January to March, these gentle giants migrate to Hawaii's warm waters to breed and have their calves. I recommend booking a whale-watching tour where guides can share interesting facts about these amazing creatures while you watch them breach and play.
My Experience: During my last Maui trip, I had the most magical moment while snorkeling. We could hear their songs underwater! It was incredible to float there quietly while their haunting calls surrounded us. Though we couldn't see them from where we were, just hearing those whale songs created a connection I'll never forget. If you're visiting during whale season, go snorkeling and be sure to listen for these beautiful sounds. It's like nothing else!
Luaus
You can't visit Hawaii without experiencing a traditional luau. These fun gatherings feature Hawaiian and Polynesian music, dancing, and delicious local food. It's a great way to enjoy island culture in a festive setting that everyone in your group will love.
My Experience: I'll admit I was a bit hesitant about attending a luau, worried it might feel overly touristy. I couldn't have been more wrong! The luau we attended was authentic and respectful of Hawaiian traditions. We learned about the cultural significance behind each dance, tasted dishes prepared using traditional methods, and gained a deeper appreciation for Hawaiian heritage. The performers were incredibly talented, and the atmosphere was magical as the sun set and torches were lit. Don't skip this experience - a good luau offers genuine cultural insights while still being thoroughly entertaining.
Lava Shows
If you're fascinated by volcanoes, don't miss taking a boat tour to see lava flowing into the ocean off the Big Island. Experienced guides take you to safe viewing spots where you can witness this dramatic natural spectacle. Tours run at different times, so you can choose morning, sunset, or evening trips depending on what works best for your schedule.
Helicopter Tours
One of my absolute favorite Hawaii experiences was taking a helicopter tour of Kauai with my sister. Nothing compares to seeing the islands from above!
My Experience: We flew over the famous Na Pali Coast, which has those dramatic cliffs you see in movies. But what really took my breath away were the lush valleys in Kauai's interior. The pilot took us into areas you simply can't reach by car or foot, where waterfalls cascade down impossibly green mountainsides. My sister and I kept looking at each other in disbelief - the landscape was so vibrant it almost seemed unreal. The "Garden Isle" nickname makes perfect sense when you see all those shades of green below you. We still talk about that helicopter ride years later. If you have room in your budget for just one splurge in Hawaii, this would be my pick!
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
SUP actually originated in Hawaii and offers a peaceful way to explore the islands' beautiful waters. The route from Lanikai Beach to the Mokulua Islands is particularly scenic. This activity works for beginners and experienced paddlers alike, and the clear water often gives you glimpses of fish and turtles below.
Horseback Riding Tours
For a different perspective on Hawaii's landscapes, try a horseback riding tour. Whether you prefer coastal trails with ocean views or hidden paths through valleys, there are options for all interests. It's a relaxing way to access spots you couldn't easily reach on foot.
Mauna Kea
This dormant volcano on the Big Island last erupted over 4,000 years ago. Hiking to the summit rewards you with amazing panoramic views. Be sure to stop at the Visitor Information Station first for weather updates and safety tips. Mauna Kea is also one of the world's best stargazing locations once the sun goes down.
Kona Coffee Farm Tour
Coffee lovers shouldn't miss touring a Kona coffee farm on the Big Island. You'll see the entire process from growing to brewing, and of course, sample some of this famous coffee. The rich volcanic soil creates perfect growing conditions for these special beans. It's a great activity even for non-coffee drinkers, and you can bring home some authentic Kona coffee as the perfect souvenir.
These eight activities offer a great mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation for your Hawaii trip. As your travel specialist, I can help customize your perfect island itinerary based on your interests, budget, and which islands you want to visit.
